Matt Winn might have spent much of his sports related career in the background, however that doesn't minimize his contribution to Louisville sports.
In 1902 Churchill Downs was in financial dire straits, so much so that the Kentucky Derby could have ended. This calamity was avoided though in large part due to the work of local businessman Matt Winn.

UK and Louisville may have bid goodbye to a perfect season, but three other NCAA teams in the Bluegrass State are hanging on to an undefeated record.
The Indiana Hoosiers knocked Kentucky from the undefeated ranks in December. Georgetown followed suit a few weeks later by handing Louisville it’s first loss of the season. Still, the basketball mad Bluegrass State can boast THREE undefeated NCAA teams.
