Be a Glass Artist for a Day at Glassworks Walk-In Workshop

Louisville is glassblowing-obsessed, and that’s dandy, but if you want to try your hand at glasswork, it’s not the only option. The Walk-In Workshop at Glassworks is a fun way to get artistic with your friends and family, as you create pieces with the fusing or cold glass method. You’ll be working with various shapes, textures and thicknesses of glass, cutting it, arranging it to form your design, and having it fired in the kiln by Glassworks staff.

My husband and I tried it, even though he says, “ugh, no,” to almost every crafty activity I suggest, and we both became absorbed in the process and had a great time. Tip: Crafts that require safety glasses and involve glass cutters are very guy-friendly. Even better: I got the earrings I made and the ring he made for me out of the deal. Pretty smart, huh?

The time commitment is minimal. Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (get there by 4:00 so you’ll have time to finish your project), staffers are on site to explain the materials and process and get you started. Then you run with your artistic creation. You can choose from among several projects, each of which will probably take you an hour or so to finish (but you can take as long as you want if you’re having fun playing): Pendants, earrings, rings, trays, dishes, magnets and more are project ideas. Examples of each are displayed in the showroom if you need help visualizing your finished piece. The hardest part will be deciding among all the color and texture options that you’ll be cutting and layering. Or maybe the cutting was the hardest; I learned I’m not the best at glass cutting, but there were so many shapes already cut from other projects that I easily worked around that.

I was very pleasantly surprised at the pricing. The cost for making my own earrings was no more than I would have spent on a comparable pair at retail, and I got to design them myself.

Glassworks suggests the workshop is appropriate for ages 12 and up.

The staff needs about two weeks to fire your creation, after which you can pick it up or have it shipped.
