                                  Dvořák             Cello Concerto

                                  Elgar                 "Enigma" Variations

London’s illustrious history of orchestral tradition and musical heritage extends back to the courts of English royalty and the birth of the modern subscription concert series. A powerhouse in the Baroque era, London boasts some of the world’s most beloved concert halls and remains, to this day, one of the most vital markets for classical music and musicians. Britten, Dvořák and Elgar all enjoyed premieres of their work in London, including all compositions featured on this program. Historians suggest that the tune of Britain’s national anthem, "God Save the Queen," served as Elgar’s inspiration in the creation of his "Enigma" Variations, one of his best-known large-scale works.

Jorge Mester, conductor

Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra, Jorge Mester conducts the main classics concerts. While Mester served as music director of the Louisville Orchestra from 1967 to 1979, he recorded 72 world premieres with the orchestra.  For a full bio log on to LouisvilleOrchestra.org.

Julie Albers, cello

From the age of four, Julie Albers has been playing the cello. She began her orchestral career with the Cleveland Orchestra in 1998 and has since performed across the United States and Europe as well as Korea, Taiwan and New Zealand. Last year ended a two year residency with the Chamber Music Society after which she began playing with the Albers String Trio and the cello quartet, Cello. Julie Albers performs on a N. F. Vuillaume cello made in 1872 and makes her home in New York City with her husband, Bourbon, and their dog, Dozer.
