The Filson Historical Society will host another Civil War Field Institute whose mission is to explore the complex history of the Civil War era in Kentucky, the Ohio Valley region and the Upper South through a series of field trips and lectures that allow participants to follow the footsteps of the armies and stand on the grounds where they fought. The October Field Institute will be led by Tour Guide Thomas Cartwright, one of the nation’s leading authorities on the Battle of Franklin. He most recently was Executive Director of The Carter House, and frequently appears on various documentaries for the History Channel, A&E, Travel Channel, CNN, Discovery, and Preservation Channel. The Institute’s Keynote Speaker is James Lee McDonough, author of Five Tragic Hours: The Battle of Franklin and Nashville: The Western Confederacy’s Final Gamble. He will present a lecture detailing these bloody and important battles. Stops on the tour include the Carter House, the Lotz Civil War House Museum, and Fort Granger in Franklin, TN, and Fort Negley in Nashville. There is a cost for these events, and space is limited.
