The Floyd Theater presents 'Safety Not Guaranteed' and 'Prometheus,' as well as a special midnight movie [Movies]
The time is nigh, my friends. Weekly movies at the University of Louisville Floyd Theater have returned in full force. Now in the second week of the semester, film screenings during the month of August are completely free – but this is the last week of August, so come to one of this week's three fantastic film selections to see what all the fuss is about.
It starts tonight (Thursday) with Safety Not Guaranteed, a fun (and curiously satisfying) indie dramedy which manages to hold at bay the hipster pretension such a label implies. Based on a personal ad which actually appeared in a magazine in the 1980s (“Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. Safety not guaranteed.”), the story tells of a magazine reporter and two interns who go to investigate such an ad for the basis of a feature story. However, things may be more complicated than they anticipated. Safety Not Guaranteed will play at 5:00 and 8:00.
Friday and Saturday brings four screenings of Prometheus. Ridley Scott's newest film serves as a sort-of prequel/spin-off to his excellent film Alien (Scott has stated that it “shares strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak). In Prometheus, evidence is found which may answer questions about the origin of our species, and so a team of explorers sets out to, well, explore. Prometheus will be shown at 5:00 and 8:00 on both days.
Finally: a midnight showing of Cabin in the Woods on Friday night! Joss Whedon takes the time-honored cabin-in-the-woods horror genre (Friday the 13th, Cabin Fever) and turns it on its head. As a group of five friends head out to the woods for the weekend, they are all set to have a good time – until zombies pop out of the ground to try to kill them. The catch – the whole ordeal is being orchestrated by a team of specialists who are watching their every move and controlling everything (this is not a spoiler – we find this out at the very beginning of the film). Cabin in the Woods is utterly ridiculous, and the plot is so full of holes and contradictions it falls apart like moldy cheese under scrutiny – but it's so damn much fun to watch that none of this will occur to you until later.
The Floyd Theater is located on the third floor of the Student Activities Center on the U of L campus (look for the clock tower). Further information can be found at the SAB Film Committee Facebook page.
