Giant prawns, tons of butter, and Velvet Elvises on Secrets of Louisville Chefs Live [Food and Dining]
I watch maybe 10 minutes of TV a week, so my first time seeing the show Secrets of Louisville Chefs Live was yesterday, when I got the chance to attend a live taping. When it's 98 degrees and 90% humidity outside, an air-conditioned auditorium that smells of sizzling butter is a great place to be.
The first featured chef was Marsha Lynch, who worked at several high end restaurants around town before recently becoming an instructor at Sullivan University. She made sun-dried tomato and goat cheese grit cakes topped with grilled prawns, tarragon butter, and buerre blanc sauce (basically cream, butter, and vinegar.) I can definitely say that I was jealous of this woman's ability to keep calm and maintain humorous banter with the co-host of the show while making a finicky sauce like buerre blanc.
The second chef was Michelle Brinke, who also has a good restaurant background. She recently opened her restaurant in the Goss Avenue antique mall. She made two dishes: eggs Benedict on a fried green tomato, and the Velvet Elvis: a Peanut butter, banana, and bacon sandwich coated in Frosted Flakes and pan-fried in butter. The first dish was a special, not on the regular menu at Michelle's, but not to worry, you can sample the Velvet Elvis any morning of the week at the restaurant.
The two biggest highlights of the taping were getting to see the mistakes that they edit out for TV, and getting to sample the food. For your drooling pleasure,I took a picture of my sample plate. All three items combined make for an odd mix, but it was delicious.
They told us at the end that yesterday's show will air on Aug. 15 at 4:30 p.m. on channel 21 ION
