Country artist Dwight Yoakam will be part of the HullabaLOU Festival at Churchill Downs this Sunday, July 25. Hailing from Pikeville, KY and raised in Ohio, Yoakam's career got its start in the 1980's, bringing his brand of “hillbilly” music to the public, even after Nashville rejected his sound as unmarketable. Playing rock and punk clubs after moving to Los Angeles, he found his audience, and since his debut album, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc. in 1986, he has produced 12 Gold and 9 Platinum or multi-Platinum records.

Also called a New Traditionalist, Yoakam was one of the pioneers of the sound, influenced by Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and Bob Wills. In addition to music, Yoakam is a film actor and director with notable appearances in movies like Swing Blade, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, and Panic Room.

Yoakum is a dynamic live performer with his trademark twangy guitar, heartfelt lyrics, and crooning voice. Below, he sings “Buenos Noches from a Lonely Room”:
