Building on both the success of last year’s inaugural film festival and the void of organization amongst local filmmakers, DCFF founders Kristofer & Ashley Rommel continue their attempts to bring Louisville to the forefront of the independent film world with two new ventures; “Derby City Film Chat”, an online weekly radio show, and “The Derby City Independent Film Series”, a monthly showcase of films from local and regional filmmakers.
“We accepted 19 films from local and regional filmmakers at last year’s festival,” Kris says proudly, “but there were so many more entries that we didn’t accept and we wanted a way to showcase those films as well.” Thus the Derby City Independent Film Series was born.
The series (DCIFS) will run the final Friday of every month at the Vernon Coffee Roaster which is part of Vernon Lanes off Story Ave.
The series will only showcase films from filmmakers with ties to Louisville or the surrounding region. Each month there will be either 2 feature films or a combination of feature films and short films. Admission is free, but seating is limited so it is best to arrive early.
“The Vernon is a great location for the series.” says Ashley, “It is easy to get to, they have food, coffee and beer, and after the films are over people can stay for bowling or go down to Club Vernon and listen to a DJ or band. It’s all in one place!”
Kris and Ashley already have films scheduled through July and more come in all the time. “This is different from the festival. With the series we are trying to build unity amongst the filmmakers. It’s not a competition to get in the series, just send us your film and we’ll slot in it when we can. Obviously there are some restrictions as to content, but pretty much if you are a local filmmaker and want to show your work to Louisville we’re here to help.” Kris states. The series kicks off January 30th with “Finale I” and “Finale II” by James Hardin and William Cothron. The first film starts at 7:00 PM and there will be a chance for the audience to ask questions and chat with the filmmakers between and after each film.
Going in a completely different direction and thinking more nationally then locally, Kris is preparing for the inaugural “Derby City Film Chat” internet radio show on blogtalkradio.com, which gets underway Tuesday January 6th at 11:00 PM. “The show will be an hour long and can be listened to live or downloaded and listened to later. We’ll focus on production news from the city and state, as well as topical national “Hollywood” news. We will also have interviews with indie filmmakers, both local and national, and people can call in or e-mail and participate on whatever the conversation maybe that show. There should be something for everyone.”
Derby City Film Chat airs live on blogtalkradio.com every Tuesday at 11:00 PM eastern and the Derby City Independent Film Series runs the last Friday of every month at the Vernon Coffee Roaster at 1575 Story Ave. More information about both as well as the next Derby City Film Festival can be found on the festival website at www.derbycityfilmfest.com.
