Beginning at 3 pm on November 28th with food, beverages and craft booths, city officials welcome you to be a part of the lighting of downtown for the holiday season… “Light Up Louisville!”
This will be the 28th year of the lighting ceremony as the city we know will be converted into a holiday focal point, filled with amazing light shows, fireworks and musical adaptations. This family-friendly event is free to everyone, as over 75,000 residents are expected to join in on the annual day after Thanksgiving celebration. The festivities take place at Jefferson Square Park.
The 50-foot fir tree that will be the centerpiece of the event has been delivered and is currently being prepared for the moment it will light up central downtown! In 2007, city officials decided against having a tree, so the return of the classic Christmas symbol is a highly anticipated one.
In addition to food and music, and children’s entertainment, Wendy’s Restaurants will present the Winter Wonderland Parade, also beginning at 3:00 pm. The route will run along Jefferson Street from 7th Street east to 4th Street through 4th Street Live.
New this year will be the “Lou-Who-Ville” at the Louisville Visitor’s Center. Guests can get their picture taken with the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who and receive complimentary hair decorations from the “Who Ville Hair Salon”. City businesses such as the Ali Center and Louisville Science Center will also have booths at the visitor’s center in cooperation with the festivities.
After the parade, Santa’s Workshop and Children’s crafts will be available, along with Winter Wonderland Stage Entertainment until the anticipated arrival of Kris Kringle himself! Then, at 7 PM, Santa Claus will make his way to “Light Up Louisville” along Jefferson & 5th Streets, as he helps Mayor Abramson flip on the downtown lights!
Following the lighting ceremony until 10 pm, be sure to check out the music and entertainment, food, shopping and holiday pub located on Jefferson Street between 5th & 6th streets. JD Shelburne will be the featured artist on the stage entertainment.
It’s a great reason to get the family all bundled up, in the car and celebrate the holidays with 75,000 of your closest friends!
