The Nerd centers on the lives of Willum Cubbert, an architect who's life was saved in Vietnam, and Rick Steadman, the man who saved him. Willum comes to find that Rick is not only inept, leading to a comedy of incidents, but also may not know when he has stayed too long in Willum's place.

The Nerd, created by Larry Shue, went to Broadway in 1987 and 1988 for 441 performances at the Helen Hayes Theatre. Mark Hamill, of Star Wars fame, performed as Willum during the run.
