Save money, make closet space at spring consignment sales and shops

It's about to happen if it hasn't already: the onslaught of magazines and coupons in your mailbox heralding the arrival of Spring and nudging you to clean out your closets to make room for new clothes. What will your kids wear to all the Spring holidays, graduations, showers, and parties?

When you're unable to buy brand new outfits for every member of your family—especially the little growing ones who will only wear it one season—and you also need to clear out your closets, basement, or garage, consignment stores and yearly sales may be your answer. Cheaper clothes and more space in which to store them—it's really a win-win for everyone.

Below is a list of three major consignment sales in the Louisville area this spring. Consignors usually get discounts and first dibs at clothing, toys, furniture, and gear at preview days. Go to the website or call for more updated information, as dates and consignor details are likely to change.

KidStuff Sale  (http://kidstuffsale.com)

February 14-16 in New Albany at the National Guard Armory

March 21-24 10am-8pm daily at Ramada Plaza Conference Center (9700 Bluegrass Parkway)

Kids 2 Kids Consignment Sale (hosted by the Louisville Mothers of Twins Club)

April 13 8am-1pm at Immanuel United Church of Christ (2300 Taylorsville Road)

Little Treasures (http://lky.littletsale.com)

March 6 9am-9pm, March 7-9 9am-7 pm, March 10 1pm-5 pm (Look for half price items, but also look for a decreased selection.) Bowman Field- Louisville Executive Aviation (2700 Gast Blvd off Dutchman’s Lane)

There are also some great kids' consignment shops in Louisville, where you can stop in and find a bargain whenever you want. If you are interested in consigning your gently used spring and summer clothing with one of these stores, call first to see if you need an appointment or to find out if they're currently taking what you're hoping to sell.

Buttons Bows & Britches 111 Cannons Lane near Frankfort Ave (384-3884)

Kiddie Kloset 5207 Dixie Highway (447-1989)

Once Upon a Child at 8176 Dixie Highway, 4416 Outer Loop, and 4030 Taylorsville Road (onceuponachild.com)

If you're looking to find your son a gently used suit or a Lilly Pulitzer sundress for your little princess, these boutiques are more selective in what they sell. Be sure to call first before you show up with a tub full of Wal-Mart and Old Navy clothes; you'll have likely wasted your time.

Sluggerkids 4909 Brownsboro Road (425-3867)

Margaret’s Consignment 2700 Frankfort Ave (896-4706)

Another Time Around 12340 Shelbyville Road in Middletown (253-9900)

About Anna Frye
After living in Chicago, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Colorado, my husband and I made our (hopefully? probably?) final move back to Louisville, where I was born and raised. Ahhh...it's nice to be home. Now I'm busy making sure my three little ones learn to love the quirks and traditions of their new hometown: Kentucky Derby Festival, no school on Oaks Day, grits and hot browns (not necessarily together), monograms, parks, festivals, and even our seasonal allergies.
