Sports legends of the Ville: Dr. Dunkenstein [Sports]

I believe the title of Dr. Dunkenstein is actually an honorary degree from the University of Louisville, but I could be wrong. Either way, Darrell Griffith is one of the most exciting basketball players to come out of the Louisville of all time and, as such, one of the sports legends of the Ville.

A born and bred Louisvillian, Griffith was already a standout at Male high school prior to making his way to play for hall of fame coach Denny Crum of the University of Louisville back in 1976.

In his four year stint, Griffith culminated his time with a 1980 NCAA championship with a team called the G.O.A.T. squad (Greatest of all Time). In that victory over UCLA, where Crum was prior to joining the Cards, Griffith made true on a promise to bring a national championship to his hometown school, the first in school history.

Known as a workhorse while at Louisville, Griffith was a two time All-American, a 1980 Wooden Award Winner, and was the first Card to reach 2,000 points. After the 1980 championship, the Cards honored Griffith by retiring his jersey. And, even though Griff hasn’t made it to the Naismith basketball hall of fame yet, his University of Louisville jersey has, being prominently displayed in the museum in Springfield.

With his credentials, it was no surprise when Griffith became the second draft pick in the NBA in 1980, going to the Utah Jazz, where he won Rookie of the Year. It was during this time that Griff earned another nickname for Utah’s sports media in Golden Griff, a title given to him for his explosive and exciting play. Today, he’s the fourth leading scorer in Jazz history, and his pro jersey was retired in 1993.

Call him doctor; call him golden. One thing’s for sure: Darrell Griffith is one of the sports legends of the Ville.

About Dave Rose
Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
