When Guided by Voices first announced their reunion tour last year, Louisville wasn't even on the ticket. The band came dangerously close to the Derby city when they played at Newport's Southgate House, and while it would make sense for them to travel through here shortly after, there seemed to be no time for a Louisville show. Fortunately for us, Guided by Voices were actually saving the best for last.

Their upcoming show this Saturday at Headliner's will be the band's final stop of their self-described "classic line-up" tour, which brought together King Shit-Robert Pollard, and his golden boys-guitarists Tobin Sprout and Mitch Mitchell, bassist Greg Demos and drummer Kevin Fennell. It had been more than 15 years since these men had last performed together.

Encompassing GBV's most definitive years, this tour will stick exclusively to set-lists from the band's most acclaimed albums, Bee Thousand (1994), Alien Lanes (1995) and Under the Bushes, Under the Stars (1996). These records are best recalled as defining the band's signature jangly lo-fi sound that helped shape music in the 90s. But even these few albums, which are already brimming with 20+ songs each, are only a small portion of the music that Robert Pollard has put out in the past decades. In 2010, Pollard released a new album with his side stint, Boston Spaceships, and is already prepping to dispatch another solo record this month.

Through many drunken marathons of bite-size songs compacted into less than 2-3 hour performances, Pollard and the gang have pounded through six weeks of non-stop touring, kicking off in Dallas, TX and ending here in Louisville. We can only hope they will provide a suitable ending to their long-awaited, but short-lived, reunion.
