Over 30 attendees from the U.S. and Canada learned the art of distilling in the heart of Bourbon Country
Distilled Spirits Epicenter (DSE), an artisan distillery and education center, welcomed over 30 entrepreneurs and aspiring distilling professionals from the U.S. and Canada for Louisville’s first educational program focusing on distilled spirits from Jan. 14 to Jan. 18. Moonshine University, the educational division of DSE, was the site of the 5-Day Distiller Course, which explored not only the science of distillate production and its hands-on application, but also presented an honest examination of the business side of the distilling industry. The detailed curriculum, endorsed by Jefferson Community and Technical College, was presented by master distillers and industry insiders including operators, vendors and support service providers.
There was also a half-day course on Sunday, Jan. 13, which explored the challenges of building a craft distillery, from site renovation/construction to financial and regulatory hurdles. Attendees raved that the course was “The Kentucky Derby of Distilling,” that “The value for your dollar invested here is unparalleled,” and was “hands-on and practical.” As the exclusive Educational Member of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, the DSE offers an unparalleled wealth of resources making Moonshine University’s standard of education unique in the industry.
In addition to the 5-Day Distiller Course, DSE’s Moonshine University offers Bourbon Enthusiast Classes the second Saturday of every month for those with the passion for America’s legendary native spirit. Each two-hour class features a theme, special guests, and hors d'oeuvres. Topics include bourbon's history, legends and lesser known stories. Each class includes sensory evaluations of featured bourbons along with a tour of the distillery. The next class will be held on Saturday, March 9 and will focus on choosing which bourbon for which cocktail. For more information, visit www.moonshineuniversity.com or call 502-301-8126.
