The University of Louisville Hite Art Institute is pleased to announce the opening of William Bailey: Paintings Drawings Prints – works on paper. This exhibition features over thirty works on paper which highlight both of Bailey's signature still life and figurative styles and illuminate his distinctive color palette. The exhibition will open Friday, February 15th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Originally from Council Bluffs Iowa, Bailey earned his B.F.A and M.F.A from Yale University and studied under the minimalist painter, Josef Albers. He is often considered one of America's leading realists, although he works from memory and imagination rather than direct observation. Bailey has said, “The paintings I do are not from life– they're made up, but they're made up from real life situations." Bailey's work strives to remove the constraints of place and time from its subjects often by depicting multiple light sources, slightly skewed perspectives, and altered scale relations. The familiar objects become more like characters that assume personalities and must interact with one another to negotiate the given space. A quiet and timeless sense of order tends to emerge through Bailey’s work as the relationships between the objects and figures become more important than any individual presence.

William Bailey’s work can be seen in a host of prominent public and private collections both nationally and internationally, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

Hours: Tuesday through Friday 11:00 - 6:00, Saturday 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. First Friday Trolley Hops open until 9:00 pm.
