Harvest Homecoming Festival in Downtown New Albany
Honored by the Library of Congress Bicentennial Local Legacies Project in 2000, Harvest Homecoming, a festival drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors to New Albany, Ind., has been thriving and growing for 44 years. The festival was conceived as a means of bringing the people of Southern Indiana together to share in its wealth of talent, historic background and beauty.

Halloween Trilogy of Radio Plays at The Bard's Town
The Coffee Cup Theatre Company opens its 2012-2013 season with a trio of Halloween plays. Presented as a traditional 1940s style radio program, the evening begins with W.W. Jacobs' The Monkey’s Paw. The story is based on the famous setup in which three wishes are granted. In The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde a man is doomed to spend the rest of time haunting until his wish is finally granted due to an act of kindness by a child. The evening ends with Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado in which Montressor is driven by a burning desire to avenge his family’s suffering and his father’s death.

Measuring the Age and Size of the Universe at the Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium
Dr. Kris Stanek of Ohio State will give the 12th annual Bullitt Lecture in Astronomy. Starting with a surprisingly accurate measurement of the size of the Earth by ancient Greeks, Stanek will discuss how humans gradually came to appreciate the vast size of the universe, and where the solar system fits in the cosmic history. He will then briefly discuss the future evolution of the solar system and the universe. After the lecture, telescopes will be available to view the night sky, weather permitting.

Classics 2: Guitar Fantasy at Whitney Hall
Multiple Grammy Award-winner Sharon Isbin makes her Louisville Orchestra debut in October. Isbin studied with Andrès Segovia and has been hailed as “the pre-eminent guitarist of our time." While Joseph Schwantner's original work for guitar and orchestra is for a soloist and orchestra, it is not set in a typical concerto form in a classical sense. The piece, as the title informs the listener, is a fantasy. Beginning with a bold orchestral gesture, the guitar enters with a musical figure that is entwined within the orchestra music. The strum of a guitar and its ringing strings, with each note articulated quickly after the note preceding it and sustaining, especially influenced Schwantner's orchestration. In this sense, the orchestra acts as one colossal guitar.

Belknap Fall Festival at Douglass Loop
The signature event of the official Week in the Highlands, a Louisville Metrofest event, the festival features live music, juried arts and crafts, family fun, local food, food trucks and beer garden.
